The Sony FX5: What It Would Actually Change on a Sideline

Sony dropped a 5K cinema body between the FX3 and the FX6. Here’s the part that matters for sports.

Sony announced the FX5 in late July, and it slots into the Cinema Line right where I’ve been feeling the gap. Above the FX3, below the FX6, and not meant to replace either one. I haven’t had one in my hands yet, so this isn’t a review. It’s me reading a spec sheet against the jobs I actually shoot, working out which numbers would show up in the delivered work and which ones are just numbers.

Three base ISOs, and why that’s the headline

The FX5 runs three base ISOs (800, 4000, and 12800) off a new 16.6MP fully stacked full-frame sensor. That middle and top rung is the whole story for me. Night football under stadium lights and wrestling under hard, uneven arena lighting are the two situations where my current setup is working hardest, and a native high ISO is not the same thing as pushing a lower one and cleaning it up later. Clean footage at 12800 changes what’s possible after sunset without dragging fast glass everywhere.

Sony rates it at 15+ stops in S-Log3, with a dual gain mode taking that past 16. On a gameday that mostly buys latitude for blown stadium lights and players sitting in shadow in the same frame, which is the exact problem every sideline hands you.

Open gate is the one I’d use every single week

5K open gate, meaning a full-pixel 3:2 readout, sounds like a feature for people finishing in a DI suite. For me it’s the opposite. Almost every job now gets delivered twice: a horizontal cut for the program or the site, and a vertical cut for TikTok and Instagram. Shooting open gate means one take I can reframe both ways in post with real pixels to spare, instead of shooting a compromise 16:9 and cropping into it until the vertical looks soft.

That’s not a spec-sheet win. That’s an afternoon of my life back on every multi-deliverable job.

4K 240p, used sparingly

4K up to 240fps, 5K to 60, FHD to 240. Slow motion is the easiest thing in the world to overuse in a highlight package, and if you ramp everything then nothing lands. But a clean 240fps at 4K means the one moment per game that deserves it, the catch or the pin or the dunk, can be stretched without switching to a lower-resolution mode and hoping it cuts against the rest of the footage. Same body, same look, no seam.

Internal RAW, and the storage bill

Internal 16-bit X-OCN RAW in three flavors is the kind of thing I’d turn on for a commercial or branded shoot and leave off for a Tuesday night game. Grading headroom is real, but so are the cards and the drive space, and a full slate of games shot RAW is a media-management problem I don’t currently have. Good to have the option sitting there instead of needing an external recorder to get it.

The small stuff that adds up

Waveform, vectorscope, and false color are built in, with false color mapped to a button out of the box. That means exposure decisions get made on the camera instead of hoped for and fixed later. There’s a focus map too. The body is 750g, which is FX3 territory rather than FX6 territory, and it bundles an XLR top handle that records 32-bit float at 96kHz. For run-and-gun sideline audio, 32-bit float quietly removes a whole category of unrecoverable mistake.

The takeaway

The FX30 still shoots everything on this site and it isn’t going anywhere. It earns its place, and a new body doesn’t make good footage. What the FX5 would buy me specifically is night games and one-take-two-deliverables, and those are the two things clients ask for most. That’s the case for it. Once I’ve actually shot with one, I’ll write the version of this post that’s worth more than a spec sheet.
